Admission Requirements

Acceptance to the Medical Laboratory Science Program is based on a number of factors, including academic record, letters of reference and a personal interview.
Interested in Applying?
The program accepts applications from August through October 15 for the next academic year's class.

The Admissions Committee at Nebraska Methodist Hospital bases its acceptance on the strength of a student's college academic record, letters of reference, and a personal interview that is conducted during the application process. In order to become enrolled in this NAACLS accredited medical laboratory science program, students must complete courses at an accredited four-year college or university.

Minimum College GPA

  • Cumulative average = 2.5
  • Science/math average = 2.5
  • GPAs of 3.0 or above are considered more competitive

Minimum Prerequisite Courses

Biology – A minimum of 16 semester hours (or equivalent quarter hours) in the biological sciences to include:

  • Microbiology with lab
  • Genetics or Molecular Biology
  • Immunology

Chemistry – A minimum of 16 semester hours (or equivalent quarter hours) in chemistry to include two upper level courses (200 level or above) with labs, such as Organic Chemistry or Biochemistry*.

*Biochemistry is highly recommended.

Math – A college Statistics course is required.

Recommended Courses include: Medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology, Pathogenic Microbiology, and Parasitology.

All prerequisite  math and science courses must be taken for a letter grade. Course grades below a "C minus" in required courses will not be accepted for credit. Survey and remedial courses do not qualify as fulfillment of chemistry, biology, and math requirements. In addition, the MLS Program will not accept AP, CLEP, or DANTES credit toward math or science requirements.

Other science and general education courses may be necessary to satisfy the degree requirements of the college affiliate. Students may be required to update any biology and chemistry course work that was completed more than five years prior to admission to the clinical year.
